ElementPlanned (methods)Found (results)
PopulationAdults, over 18 years of age, with unilateral or bilateral fractures of the mandibular condylesNot reported
InterventionAny form of open method of reduction and fixationNot reported
ComparisonAny form of closed (conservative) management of mandibular condyle fractures: no active intervention (other than soft diet, analgesics or antibiotics), or intermaxillary (maxillary-mandibular) fixation with rigid or elastic tractionNot reported
OutcomesPrimary outcomes: 1. Status of occlusion (assessed by trialists); 2. Degree of function post-operatively (mouth opening and mobility, protrusive or translatory movements, facial nerve function, ankylosis); 3. Aesthetics (symmetry, vertical facial height); 4. Post-operative pain (validated analogue scale e.g. VAS, or medication use). Secondary outcomes: 1. Quality of life (validated questionnaire); 2. Patient satisfaction (questionnaire). Adverse effects: inflammatory complications (osteomyelitis, hematoma, pseudarthrosis, wound dehiscence, persistent dysaesthesia, post-operative infection, abscess), anaesthetic complications, nerve injury, disturbance of occlusal function/deviation of the mandible/internal TMJ derangements/ankylosis, need for re-treatment or corrective surgery. Costs (direct and indirect). Not reported
Study designsRandomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs)Not reported
